Dialysis Access Surgery Post Operative Instructions

Home Care

Keep the dressings dry until the sutures are removed. If the dressings get wet, replace them with clean dry ones.

Do not use dressings that place pressure on the av graft or fistula or completely encircle the arm or wrist.

AV fistula patients - Please exercise your fistula arm by squeezing a rubber ball ten times, four times a day. This does not apply to av graft patients.

How to Protect Your AV Graft or Fistula

All of the following are to help prevent cutting off the flow in your dialysis access because that could cause it to clot and stop functioning. If it clots or stops functioning this would require additional surgery.

Do not sleep on the AV graft or fistula.

Do not wear jewelry or tight sleeves on the arm that has the dialysis access.

Do not carry anything hanging over the arm that has the dialysis access.

Do not let anyone take your blood pressure or take blood from the arm with the dialysis access.

Check the dialysis access for any problems twice a day and call Vascular Solutions if you have any concerns, including:

Loss of thrill over the dialysis access

Loss of pulsation over the dialysis access

Pain or hardness in the area of the dialysis access

A red or swollen incision

Drainage from the incision or dialysis access region

If any of the above are present, do not pick or try to self-treat your AV graft or fistula. Contact Vascular Solutions immediately! If this is not possible then go to your nearest emergency room and tell them to contact Vascular Solutions. If there is bleeding from the needle puncture site, following a hemodialysis session, keep continuous gentle pressure on the puncture site and contact Vascular Solutions. If this is not possible then go to your nearest emergency room and tell them to contact Vascular Solutions.
