Regardless of the indication for surgery, the operation is the same. The patient is brought into the operating room and either a nerve block is preformed with sedation or general anesthesia is employed. The neck is rotated gently to better expose the appropriate side. An incision is created along the border of the Sternocleidomastoideus muscle as shown in the diagram below. | ||||

The sternocleiodomastoideus muscle is moved to the side to expose the common carotid artery and its branches. The patient is given heparin, which is a very strong blood thiner and the arteries are clamped. In most cases, a plastic tube is placed to bridge between the internal and common carotid artery so as to provide a detour for blood and so provide blood flow to the brain while the operation is preformed in a bloodless field. | ||||||||
